Coaster Refined

Image
Coaster Refined I decided to go ahead with my spider concept but make it so that the legs are movable and it's more 3D than just a cut out of a spider shape. I also decided to do acrylic for the material because I feel that it would be the best for the black colour, but also since it's plastic you can use it like a whiteboard and draw fun faces.  The Parts I made it so that the "head" interlocks with the base. There's 6 layers that stack to make it all complete.  I made these guidelines to create the spaces for each leg.  I wanted the legs to spin on a cylinder, but you can't laser cut a cylinder so I decided I would stack circles (the same size as the holes in the legs) to make them. I made a rectangle the size of 6 circles stacked up and put it where the legs would go to create space for the cylinder. This way I knew everything would fit. Then the top of these are enclosed to make sure the cylinders don't come off.  The coaster with a glass The coaster ...

Coaster Concepts

Image
These are the sketches I did for my concepts (There's actually 14 but I accidentally wrote 7 and 8 twice)               *7.1 and 8.1 My favourite concept from these sketches is 7.1. The idea is a few clear coasters each with a part of an image and when stacked you can see the entire image. But this one does feel like the hardest to actually execute. Due to that I think the ones I'm most excited for are 1, 5, and 8.1. One is larger rectangular coasters that look like dominos, that can hold 2 drinks. Five is probably my favourite from these 3. Its very simple just being coasters with X's and O's on them. It could be a little more complicated with the grid frame/storage thing that way you can actually play. 8.1 is also a game-ish coaster. Its puzzle piece coasters but they actually do a form a photo and can be a puzzle you can play. I think this one would be the most exciting to go through with because of designing a photo on the pieces. One of the e...

Castle Final

Image
This is my final castle design. During the speed dating critique, the feedback I got the most was to add more variation in heights and add something to the bottom. I added a hill and I made the outside towers taller than the inner ones. I did try different heights in the towers but didn't like how that looked. I added purple windows and point lights inside the windows (booleanDifference to hollow them out) to make them glow, which is my favourite part of my design. Choosing which materials to use was really difficult. It was really hard to make them look good together and not clash. Lighting was also kind of difficult. I tried directional lighting in the sky but wasn't the biggest fan and ended up just going with the skylight. I did turn off the skylight during some of my renders, which gave the castle a halloween-y look that I liked. Throughout the process of making this I did end up using the Rhino Index and discovering commands like join, pull, and filletEdge.  The render...
